Hi
The short answer is yes you will damage the engine, because the TD05 is pushing more air the engine will be running lean, causing alot more expense than buying an Apexi ECU. I'd wait until you get both and then fit them at the same time.

its pointless fitting a tdo5 unless you fit an ecu mapped for it the whole conversion can be done for about £200

I am fairly sure Scoobyclinic can map the older ecus. Having said that you should be okay running standard ecu as long as your fuelling is okay, keep the boost down and ensure that your fuel pump is uprated. As an aside you may consider an uprated pressure regulator to increase fuel pressure until you get a remap.

I ran a TD05 FE on my UK97 for about a year (circa 12k miles) @ 1.1 bar with no problems whatsoever. Likewise Rich Wild (Jap Innovations) ran his car on a similar set up for a longer period IIRC again with the standard ecu in place and had no issues.

I did eventually add the Apexi ecu and had the car mapped by Andy F but this was not out of neccessity. I would argue that the apexi was the best mod I added though and I was able to exploit the full potential of the turbo upgrade.

not for a 97.. as he is fitting a TD05 therefore assume it doesn't have one already and therefore not an early 97.. so phase 1.5.. Z4 only for phase 1.
