Question MY02 Improved throttle response

Evening All

I'm thinking of fitting an induction kit because I'd like to improve throttle response on my MY02 WRX. Initial pick-up seems sluggish

Does an induction kit make a difference or is it an urban myth?

If it does work which make would you reccomend? K&N or something else?

Advice would be really useful, thanks.

By 'initial pickup' do you mean under 2500 rpm before the turbo spins up ? A remap and a few low cost supporting mods can improve low and mid range torque by an noticable amount. To get the best out of an induction kit you need to do more tweaking to ensure a good flow of cold air and avoid drawing in hot air from the engine bay. There are a lot of threads discussing induction kits do a search and see what you think.

Thanks - yeah, pulling off with fairly low revs or flooring in 5th at 2500 gets little response so as you saythis is down to lack of low range torque. I know you're right but guess I was hoping for a quick bolt-on fix....!

Well there's actually 2 problems. Low down you're completely off turbo boost and they just don't perform off boost - nothing you can really do about that. Second is when the boost starts to build you have lag. Lag can be minimised by decatting the up-pipe (on a WRX) and the down pipe. Adding an uprated panel filter to that and remapping will give you big improvements on low/mid range torque.

I admit lack of low torque is annoying - esp when my TDi pulls better in 5th from 60mph lol.

The blitz sus induction kit is one of the worst out there for engine safety. Lets far too much crap through to damage the engine.

Just get a replacement panel filter. The stock airbox flow enough air for 400BHP.

forget about induction,... and seriously forget about jap induction

get your self a de cat, knocklink and boost gauge ... and even better a remap

if you get a de cat (sports cat ) your car will spool up quicker as the turbo can get rid of more air faster - problem with this is your car may wan't to spool too fast with not enough fuel, a boost gauge and knocklink should show if there is any problems but ultimatly adding a remap will show you 270 \280 bhp with little worries and the car will run faster and smoother than stock

It still amazes me how many people still think induction kits and VTA dump valves are the things to have on a scoob to make it perform better..lol..!

SEARCH..!

The other mod that does sharpen throttle response a bit is the Samco or other good aftermarket turbo inlet pipe. I won't say it's a massive change to the way the car drives, but it does sharpen things a little and gives perhaps 100rpm better spool.

01 wrx.
Had my prodrive high flow cat downpipe, magnex slip jointed up pipe and fuel pump fitted today. Haven't had a another remap to suit these new mods yet (the mapper had probs with another car all day) but already driving off full boost the difference is very noticeable. It responds quicker and smoother low down, ie pulling away from a crawl in 2nd or from just over 2000rpm on motorway. Definately recommended and I can't wait till its mapped again for the new mods
