play in steeringwheel
i know you have slight play in the steeringwheel to start with but my classic import wrx has what i think excessive play, has anyone had this or come across this? will it be the steering rack? or are there bushes on the rack that could cause this or even any other things that can cause this? any help will be great cheers

The only way to tell for sure is to jack the car up and check the play in each wheel and eliminate ball joints etc. Make sure the steering lock is not on

play in steering
first thing i would check is for play in track rod ends just jack up and grab wheel at 9&3 oclock and see if there is any side to side movement.
if they are ok you will need someone to rock the play in steering while you check other steering parts to trace where it is coming from

My classic also has play, very noticable at higher speeds (not higher than 70 I'll have you know!). At last month's MOT I was warned that the Track/Tie Rod Ends would'nt see the year out. Have got two new ones (not from subaru) that I am going to fit shortly.
