Default Superchip.......Oh Dear!!

Hey Guys

I have recently got myself a 94 WRX and got a reciept for a superchip so I done a search on how you guys rate it and the results are scaring me!!! I already have a reciept for a new engine for the car which explains it!!

Question is how do I know it is still fitted and how do I remove it??

Thanks in advance....

I had one on my uk spec legacy and it was basically a fuel cut defender and it was wired into the ecu. Remove your ecu and take the lid off. If you have an extra printed circuit board remove that and pm me if you get stuck.

Get rid now.............. Usually increases boost by 0.2 Bar but fools ECU into thinking running .2 BAR lower and soon enough a melted piston........... not worth it..................

And there is me thinking that SuperChips were just the forerunner of Re-Maps

Surely if this is the case they will be open to legal action or trading standards?

It's simply an early Re-map ..........................

In 5 years time you will all be laughing at the idiots who had £500 Re-maps done and fitted those Tosser CockLink thingys

The world goes around in circles ..... everything is repeated - even stupidity.

Answer:- It changes the way in which the engine behaves, deviating from the Manufacturers specifications.

Would you care to elaborate so that people who are not as technically minded as your good self may find your post of some use?

Quote from the SuperChips site:-

"Since the early 1990s, most engines have been controlled by an on-board computer, the engine control unit (ECU), which amongst other functions, defines the ignition timing, fuelling and boost pressure for all given engine speeds and loads.

After extensive development and testing, we arrive at the optimised settings for your make and model of vehicle, ensuring that each Superchip is as individual as the software inside your ECU, safely eliminating those ‘performance compromises’.

In most cases this remapped programme is installed electronically and remotely through the car’s diagnostic port. There’s no replacement chip, and we don’t touch the ECU itself.

And we always test your vehicle before handing it back for you to enjoy, just making sure everything is operating as it should be"

A SuperChip WAS an early Re-Map!!

And Re-Maps will be laughed at in the years to come in just the same way as Chavvie Spoilers and Piggy-Back Chips on the ECU!!

To think otherwise is stupidity at the higest level .......

Yes, agreed, but with remapping today's cars should be optimised, rather just klagging on a SuperChip! If it makes the car 'run' better then that's okay - yes? By run better that could be for performance or economy. A bit like Blueprinting an engine -making the most of what you've got. You should try it Pete

You let loose a Geek with stupid looking headphones (sorry, DetCans) on your ECU if you like - I will still have my engine intact in 5 years time, you will be looking at a pile of bits in 5 MONTHS time!!

Has anyone ever known a ECU Re-Mapper pay compensation for a smashed engine? Just wondering ........ how many have been taken beyond their design by a Geek with a Laptop? LOADS I would imagine!! But I bet they run away like mad when something breaks!!! with their £500 in the back pocket!!

you mean you actually paid extra for the map?

most cars come with a map as standard mate, i think you need to go speak to Trading standards about getting your money back

I have yet to see a thread that reads 'engine blows after remap'.
However, I have seen many threads with ' engine blows...no it wasn't remapped!'

When I fist got involved in Subarus I had a Superchip fitted by Falkland Performance. It added 30 odd bhp and the car ran well over about 30,000 miles. Fuel economy improved when driven carefully and the difference in available performance was very noticable. I sold it when I got a mappable ECU and it is still fitted to that owner's car several years on with no engine problems.
If you already have a Superchip fitted, rather than ditch it needlessly, get your AFRs checked by someone that knows what they are doing and has proper wide band lambda equipment and get them to listen for DET using proper electronic Det Cans.
It may well be that there are no issues but if there are, remove it asap.

I am not sure how much these cost now but there are better and safer ways of upping the power if that is what you want to do.

I agree with Harvey here.
My first Subaru was a UK late MY96 Turbo. Back 10 years ago aftermarket parts for Subaru's just didn't exist and I bought a second hand Superchip for it, paid £180, and used it at 18psi for 3 years before selling the car.
Nearly 10 years on, the car is still local to me, it's now done 130,000 miles with no problems and the superchip is still fitted.

Superchips were heavily knocked on Scoobynet and it's original forum, but mostly by people trying to sell newer items for their own companies.
I can't honestly remember reading of anyone blowing up an engine using a properly set up Superchip. Most of it was gossip.

PLENTY of re-mapped engine go BANG!!

These pages are full of them week after week ......

Not saying it's due to the Re-Map ... but, who's to say it isn't? - noone is going to blame something they paid £500+ for as the reason for the death of their engine are they now? (that will just make them look stupid) ....

More than likely they are going to blame Subaru, a bad batch of fuel or not carrying out the **** Oil Change
