how to get a uk impreza to 320 bhp plus?
hi all,
sorry if this has been asked before but i have seen a uk impreza which is 240bhp as it stands. it has a straight through exhaust from turbo back and a k&n induction kit.i am looking to get it running around or over 320bhp, what sort of mods should i be looking to add and how much will the mods cost?
any help would be great
cheers

All depends on what year car it is,
If it a MY99-00 then change the turbo to either a VF series one or a TD05FE and a remap.
I've got a 330BHP My99. This has a FMIC (£400), VF28 £125), 3" full decat(£400), K&N induction kit (£80) and a ECUTEK remap (£585).
You'll need to factor in an uprated clutch as the standard one proberly won't last and the gear box will become the weak link (Blew mine in 3 weeks)
If it an older car you need to replace the ECU, Apexi is very good

Pretty much any of the VF series turbos will make around 320bhp (28,30,34,35) or a TD05 16G
Uprated fuel pump - recommended
550 injectors - not needed for 320, 440's will manage 330bhp
Uprated Clutch - recommended
Gearbox - depends how lucky you are
Being a 98 you will need a mappable ECU eg Apexi FC

Get urself a new turbo preferably a front entry from a sti model, yellow sti injectors,a larger top mount intercooler or front mount intercooler, walbro fuel pump, and an apexi fc mapped by a decent well known mapper that should see urself pushing about 350bhp, and dont forget ur clutch and brakes thats a must!u wudnt want ur car going that fast and not being able to stop

My UK/(Euro) MY00 clutch held 25 PSI on a 20G. The gearbox failed long before the clutch did. On a weedy VF you will probably be OK, although we are of course talking about a 9 year old car which will have wear on it that may change things.
Turbo, fuel pump, Power FC, fuel pressure reg at 4 bar should do it beyond your present mods. 98 UK has 380cc injectors.

How do, I'm in the mist of getting arond the same power as you. I've got a Version 2 Impreza currently standard.
I've got a 255 Walbro fuel pump, Andy F fuel regulator, 550 Injectors, Apexi Power FC & commander, Revolution Decat exhaust and hayward & scott decat down pipe, a set of scooby sport headers and a Apexi power intake, a set of light weight pulleys, a FMIC and a HKS dump valve
I'm hopeing that little lots will give me between 310 and 330bhp.
I'm planning to have it all fittef by the end of March. I shall let you know how it goes.

Around £650-£750 including mapping, best to speak to Andy Forrest.
I'm running a VF34 at 312bhp and i'm still on the standard clutch and gearbox, my clutch has just started slipping, has been at this power for about a year and the car has done 64K.
If you want an uprated clutch i'm running a Group Buy on them at the moment:

I disagree with getting an uprated clutch, you want the clutch to fail before the gearbox! clutches are a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than gearboxes.
I am running a standard clutch and a standard MY00 gearbox with 359BHP and 343lbft of torque quite happily. Obviously I do not do drag starts from the lights but treated with a bit of respect the standard gearbox should be ok, well at least mine is! and it still takes abit of punishment when rolling.

Very true. When I was into GTIRs (still am) I'm sure alot of the gearbox issues people had was due to putting in paddle clutches which transfered all the stress to the 'box.
Although I'm sure I'm in a minority here, I think keeping the standard dump valve will protect your 'box that little bit more. Most will agree that a VTA DV causes jerkyness when driving. I think this causes stress to the 'box so running a std DV should reduce the stresses.
My belief anyway and why I don't have one anymore.
I've got STI8 IC. Want either VF28/29/30 or 35. Uprated fuel pump. Don't know if you need a fuel reg too. Ported headers and then TEK mapping.
Should see over 300 depending on turbo.

see my website -Wildsworld index for info -
took my UK 98 turbo from 208hp (Don't know who's told you its 240 to start with, 98 is 208, 99/00 is 218) to 320bhp and 300lbs/ft, as measured at scoobyclinic.
Hopefully you'll find it useful - as everyone has warned though, the gearbox will almost certainly fail at this point - I blew 1 up 2 months (6000 miles) after the last remap and another 4 weeks later......
I did spend a lot of money on 'other' parts, as documented, which you won't need for the power - but a word of warning - if its a 98 PLEASE tell me you've upgraded to 4 pots or beyond ? I wouldn't recommend the original 2 pots with any kind of power increase !
Good Luck - and enjoy

also as a note I am still on the standard box and clutch.
I don't think they've been replaced anywhere down the line. I bought the car 2 years ago and it had only been in the country 6 months. It was totally standard when I bought it apart from a set of alloys
I've driven the car around for about a year with this power and it has been fine. I use the car daily and prob do about 3/400 miles a week.

My TD05FE powered 98 (*With LOTS of supporting mods*) ran 1.6 bar from around 4K to 6500 rpm, then 1.5 to 7500. Pushed like a train mid-range - hence going through two gearboxes !!
Here's a graph showing AFR against boost, (in psi) - the hp figure is not corrected (i.e. wheel).....

So basically, gearboxes are on there limit with what bhp then folks?? i`m concerned now.....lol
And surely the style of driving a person does will help/not help the box??

The 5 spd UK box (on the classic) is the weakest link... It 'can' be made worse by the driver, but, in my case, it was the torque that made both of them let go.
In both cases, the gearbox went at around 4500 rpm whilst overtaking, in 3rd gear - I understand that its because the casing allowing the shaft to flex too much under pressure and this can cause the gear to explode. The bits fall into the box and block the selector for 1st and 2nd, leaving you with 4th and 5th, if you're lucky.
Power at this point for me was 320bhp - and more importantly, the magic 300lbs/ft (which seems to be around the limit for this box).
However, I'm sure that you'll find some people that have been using a UK box above this (but plenty who've had it let go at this point)....
Pretty sure its not my driving - the first box did 135000 miles, but only 6000 after my map to get to this power level. The second only did 6000 miles after it was fitted !
