Default Replacing rear crank seal on '96 wrx ?

My rear crank seal looks like it could be leaking, getting oil dripping down in between engine/box,just had the front crank seal done too !!!
Ive been quoted nearly £400 to do this job by a well known company on here so im going to do the job myself instead !
Has anyone got a guide of somesort on how to do this or any useful info to help me with this ?

you've either got to pull the engine or take the gearbox out, fairly involved if your not that way inclined............would think a few places would sort for around half that

yes i agree thats the price you would expect to pay for the clucth to be replaced not just the rear crank seal.

they are pretty hard to do unless you have experience pulling out the tranny. better leave it to the expert to get the job done as well as warranty on the job

often end up replacing the clutch whilst at it.. because

A) contaiminated with oil

B) is worn so best replace as it has to come off to get to the seal.

I'm fairly experienced with mechanical work so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
The clutch isn't slipping so hopefully it isn't contamininated as it's an Exedy organic and it's not very old !!
Is there anything else that could be leaking in this area ?

I thought my rear crankseal was leaking but it turned out to be a cracked inspection cover thingy! I had the crank seal done anyway while the box was off but scoobyclinic said it was ok...

as Student says there is an inspection cover that can crack or leak.. squarish and behind the flywheel on the block.. some years are plastic.. other metal..

Where would the gearbox be leaking from ? Ive already checked around the driveshafts and its not leaking from there ! At first I thought it might be the clutch slave cylinder leaking down the 'box but im not losing any fluid that I can tell of so don't think it's that
It's so hard to tell exactly where it's leaking from !

the layshaft seal.. basically where the shaft that goes into the clutch leaves the box.. you need to pull the box off or lift the engine out and check where it is coming from..

most likely is crank seal though.. you should also be able to tell from the smell whether it is engine or gearbox oil..

sniff the gearbox dip stick and then when you have finished gagging compare it to the oil leaking out the bottom of the car..

Oh I remember the smell of gearbox oil and it's definately not that !!

Most likely is the crank seal then

How hard is it to remove the 'box ? After owning a Bmw M3 for the last couple of years before this WRX I haven't needed any tools due to the fact things rarely broke or needed replacing

This is starting to bring back memories of owning Sierra Cosworths, something always needing replacing !!!
