Default grinding noise

when i put my v4 sti in reverse and move, sometimes i get a horrible grinding noise. I've looked around and cant see anything that looks out of place.
Today whnn i started my car it made the noise without even putting it in gear, could it be a problem with the gear box or some thing?

When i drive it doesnt seem to effect anything and you cant hear the noise.

did notice actually how close the exhaust is to the body, so it could be vibrating on that but wasnt sure if it could be something to do with the gearbox.

i noticed that mine did it not long after i had the uppipe fitted, in doing the up pipe they take off the down pipe so i,m thinking that maybe the down pipe aint sitting right cos the noise seems to come from under my feet really

Well surely if it happened when you started the car this then points to it being something like the exhaust as you would not of been in gear? have you ever had the exhaust off or changed?

no havnt moved it at all, its started blowing from the middle pipe joint. had it on the ramps at work and noticed how close the down pipe is to the body so im gonna try and sort that this week and see if thats whats causing it. Hopefully thats all it is.
