Smile Engine & hybrid turbo mods FINISHED 310ftlbs 305bhp

AT LAST my turbo saga is over.

Started many months ago and due to a muppet I used for some turbo work it's taken much long than I had planned. The guy isn't well known in Subaru circles but I'd rather not publish his name.

1997 UK Car final engine spec:

Walboro Fuel pump
SX Fuel Reg at 3.5bar (standard 380 injectors)
Standard TMIC with angle modification
OEM exhaust manifold & up pipe flowed
Hybrid TD04 max 1.3bar
Miltek sports cat down pipe
Miltek 2.5" straight though system
Apexi ECU mapped on 97RON supermarket fuel

Simon Roe aka Jolly Green Monster did the mapping both times and was more than helpful with advice etc... Can't give enough praise here. In his spare time (at work) he maps Rolls Royce jets - I feel happier flying now for meeting him

However I now know more about turbos than I ever thought I would, and unless you really enjoy technical details and even thermodynamics, buy a hybrid off the shelf. You can probably save a few £s doing it yourself and I enjoyed the challenge but the problems I encountered I'd rather forget. Ended up changing the turbo 5 times instead of once.

Eventually I found Motorsport (Ross) Ltd near Hereford and they were great. They did what I wanted and worked with somebody elses problem - thanks here too.

Headline figues are 310ftlbs and 305bhp. Not huge compared to lots on here, but the way the torque is delivered is great. In the final mapping session Simon asked if it felt different and for a split second I thought no, then realised I was in 4th not 3rd

Basically I'd just like to thank everyone on here who's ever given me advice. Including JollyGreenMonster, 911, AndyF and loads of others, I'm in good company and just about worthy to clean your shoes

Results on this link are done with a road dyno so they won't equate directly to rollers, but the headline power figure is pretty much spot on to what Simon reckons given the injector duty, so I'm more than happy believing them.

Just a couple of suspension mods now and I'll be back to just maintenance. Honest

Thanks again to all
Clint

Excellent results, so what compressor wheel/cover are you using now?

Compressor wheel is 19T with standard cover machined to match.
Subaru / Volvo hybrid turbo - not sure how to feel about that

Even though there have been steps this final spec is taking time to get used to. It's also noticable that I can't use all of it as much as I could any more as the roads are simply unsuitable near where I live.

Torque comes in quicker and lasts longer so I have more useable revs and I'm not reving the nuts off it which I'm happy about as it's getting on now, with 125K on the clock.

Saddly i'm looking forward to seeing an improvement in mpg too as i spend a lot of time on motorways. Non car fan friends have frowned in the past at me modifying, but hopefully I'll be able to say to them more oopf & more mpg.

Basically yes - I'm well chuffed!

very impressed with the spool and power when mapping it..

perhaps you should get a couple of the turbos built and sell them

Dunno if you saw my own thread a few days ago (sneekily placed in "general" ) on my recent mods ?

Hybrid TD04 on an 01 WRX, 305/297 on DeltaDash, 301/290 on Dastek's rollers.

Agree entirely re the early power delivery. I'm sure you too are appreciating the stronger midrange and the fact the turbo pulls so much better all the way to "the finishing line".

Happy motoring Clint.

Put it this way, most journeys are either to or from a Shell station.
