Unhappy Engine Tapping/knocking at idle??

Morning....

My car has a knocking/tapping sound coming from somewhere near the bottom-end I think. It is not really present when the car is cold, only starts as it warms up. It doesn't really do it when you rev it; but its difficult to tell as the exhaust is so loud!!

The car has been fitted with forged pistons, which I have been told could cause this. Is that true?

Ive had a compression test done and its 165, 167, 167 and 175, which im told are ok??

Help!!

Cheers

Also, forgot to mention, it has been putting out a slight bit of blue smoke lately on idle aswell; but only does this when FULLY warmed up and the car has been driven and left to idle.

I have put a few post's up about this so far; but havent had a conclusive answer! Theres so many things it could be; but I though someone might be able to hazard a guess if they new about this and the tapping aswell!

I have done mate, and he could really determine what it is without hearing/seeing the car. And API is about 300 miles from me!!

Im off to TEG Sport in Carnforth this afternoon to see what they think.

noise is possibly cambelt tensioner.. 99 or newer per chance?

blue smoke is probably unrelated and most likely the turbo seals.

Steve, I did speak to Steve Simpson at Teg this morning, he is aware that you are coming sometime soon. Just tell him that you are the guy that David at APi mentioned.

Kind regards - Good Luck David

I visited TEG Sport yesterday afternoon, and the guys there looked at it and basically said the knocking was absolutely nothing and was just a little bit of piston slap coming from the forged pistons. They said its just a 'feature' of them which nothing can be done about, and id not to worry about it.

The blue smoke was 99% likely to be turbo seals, as they reckoned it couldn't really be anything else. They came to that conclusion by the way it was doing it (on idle when warm and the over-run), and the fact that compresion is all good.

So the upshot is; a very informative day, which has thouroughly put my mind at rest!! Next step - new turbo, headers, Sti 8 TMIC and remap!!

Cheers

Good luck mate, Don't bother with fitting the STi 8 intercooler, as the gain in relation to the size of the one you have now, is not worth the hassle AND at the end of fitting it, you simply have a slightly larger intercooler BUT it still in the wrong place.

Fit a front mount and be done with it - you know it makes sense.

Right, how much is it for a decent front mount intercooler that works?! Also, do you not need to fit an induction kit if you go the FMIC route??

Cheers

At Steve's power level and for road use I think the STi8 TMIC is ideal.

IMHO...
