yes just to make the exhaust less noisie when needed, it can be a real pain to keep putting the bung in and out all the time.
not to worried about the map, and getting it tweeked soon, just need to do a few things, then gettin it booked in.
would it make a lot of a restriction?

Might be worth considering one of these to keep the neighbours sweet.

from what i can tell, you do have some sort of switch on your dash, that open/close the butterfly valve.
but it is alot of money, i think apexi do one as well, but it is all hand controlled by a wire.

the thing i would use this for is when i let it warm up on the drive then open before moving off so this should not cause any problems but it would be worth some of the mappers input on here on this system on you tube

ah i see. on a similar note, is it possible to have a car mapped and increase boost etc to get more power but still use the standard sti backbox? I know I'd have more power with an aftermarket system but I couldn't live with the noise, for a number of reasons, I need my exhaust to be quiet unfort. is it possible to tune for more power (ideally about 320bhp) but still use the standard back box, a decat is ok, but standard backbox?
strange I know but I have my reasons!!

I've currently got an Apexi DECS ECV valve welded into my centre pipe.
I've had it there for years but the car has not been in use much during that time.
Some people will have you believe that these things will automatically seize up the moment you step away from the car, but mine has been ok.
I'm sure it has happened to someone.
Certain legacy models actually have something like this fitted out of the factory, on the inlet to the backbox and I think they are known to seize, but then they all have a lot of years on them by this stage.
The Apexi DECs version is electronic and programmable so that you can set up the behaviour of how it opens & close exactly how you want.
That's done by way of % open at given revs, so you can make it gradually open as revs increase, or stay at a certain point then snap open at particular revs etc.
Very versatile as it means you can get it exactly how you want, and don't have to mess around pulling a choke control in & out of your dash as required.
It's kind of a gadget though really - hardly necessary strictly speaking, and more stuff to go wrong I guess.
It helps reduce the boom of my horribly loud system when trundling round slowly, and allows you to have full power/noise away from housing etc when you open up a bit.
It comes with I think 3 preprogrammed 'curves' for automatic control, and can be switched to manual with a joystick control.
The big problem for me is that for this to work effectively (ie a lot better than it currently does), you really need a muffler of some sort directly before it (or possibly after).
That's so that as it slows the gas down when partly closed, it will cause it to get sound energy absorbed (by a box/muffler/resonator) at the point the valve slows it.
Mine is just in a plain old straight through centre pipe though with no box though, so it slows the gas and that helps take the edge off it, but it's not nearly as effective as it 'could' be.
Hence my other thread about centre boxes. Now the car is in use again it's too loud for me and I want to shut it up a bit.
I think Apexi only now sell the manual 'choke cable' style ones. This fancy one was expensive when I bought it in a money burning phase (about £250 I think). It's currently fitted to a 3" H&S afterburner centre.
Hope that helps anyway.
Could be interested in swapping it if anyone has a suitably quietish 3" centre....
