Default speedo failure and 5000rpm rev limit..

hi, first of all im new to the forum.. so hello everyone!!
just a quick one, im new to subaru ownership, recently purchasing a 96' wrx wagon (import). the car has been amazing but in the last couple of days the speedo has failed, the check light has illuminated and the car has imposed its own 5000rpm rev limit!! not fun!!
if anyone has any pointers a would be really grateful. thanks!!!

Dont panic matey this is easily sorted, your speedo cable has probably broken at the gearbox end, have a look under the intercooler at the orange thing with a big cable through it, if it breaks the ECU cant determine whats going on over 4.5k revs so imposes a limiter ! Could also be the converter on the back of the speedo clocks etc
