..........to my car's turbo, (see other thread),

1. What sort of turbo IS it? (MY'98, late, UK car)

2. What other turbos will fit?

3. Since it already has a remap, (Bob Rawle), would there be anything to gain by going for an uprated turbo? If so, what? What's a hybrid?

4. What's meant by front/side entry? What does mine have?

5. Are used turbos OK, sometimes OK, or a definite no-no?

6. Can turbos be refurbished? If so, where?

1) TD04 Front Entry
2) Front Entry TD05 16G, 18G, 20G, VF22-35
3) Depends what you want from the car
4) Front entry setup was introduced on the MY97 Impreza. Basically more efficent turbo setup
5) I would always either buy a new unit, or a broken one and get it re-conditioned myself, then you know what you have!
6 ) Yes, turbotechnics charge around £350 for a re-built turbo.

If you replace for another TD04, no need for a remap. If you go for something else, the car will run OK at actuator pressure but if you want to run the same sort of boost pressures (or more) that it was mapped already for, really you should get it remapped again.

There are plenty of cheap new TD05s on ebay at the moment but the evidence points to them not being genuine Mitsubishi. But equally it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy second hand unless you're planning on having it rebuilt or at least checked over. Front entry converted TD05-16G or a VF35 are around 250 second hand at the moment. Old style 90 degree entry TD05s are still 150 second hand which will then need converting to front entry. AFAIK the VF35 is the best value VF series there is (out of the newage STi) but VF's are apparently not rebuildable so no point getting one unless you are happy about how much life its got in it.

If you want a bit more power, get a front entry TD05-16G. I just got one from the States for £350 to my door, brand new and genuine. If you've got a bigger budget than that look at the various hybrids that are around, for example on Andy Forrest's website, e.g. TD04 hybrid which you could get cheaper because you'd be exchanging it for your own one. Or you could go to the bigger power TD05's like the 18G or 20G which will need more supporting mods. IMHO

I've seen on here talk of the VF series, and the VF 28. Is that a good deal?

Would I get any gains from my ptresent set-up, with one of those?

What else might I need done? I already have decat, 3-port, larger STi intercooler, and Link ecu with BRD remap.

The VF28 is a fairly small unit if I remember correctly, well compared to the the TD05 16G that is.

You should be able to send off your unit to Turbo Dynamics to get it sorted but if its gonna cost you a few hundred then its worth getting a bigger one.

A hybrid is a turbo that has its internals changed or modified. I run a hybrid VF22 with a shop name of MD304. Its a VF22 turbo with different impeller and compressor wheels to give more power basically.

Here is a list of easily available turbos. Smallest/least power at the top.... (correct me if I am wrong here)

VF28
VF23
VF22 (dont use the standard ones, they have a very weak compressor wheel)
TD05 16G
VF35
TD05 18G
TD05 20G
MD321h
MD321T


You should have yellow topped injectors which indicates they are 440cc, if the turbos get too big they cannot supply enough fuel. You should be ok with the TD05 16G and maybe the VF35. Chat with your mapper to see what he suggests.
