Default Varying boost in 2nd gear

Hi guys,

Just a quickie really. My 02WRX PPP sometimes varies the boost in 2nd gear (ie when i give a little in first, then change to 2nd). Now and then i don't see full boost, but, once it gets to 3rd gear it pulls like a train again. Done the usual boost solenoid cleaning, but am stuck for options now

Any ideas?

Cheers

Mark

I think point 3.10 on here Subaru Impreza FAQ covers this, I get it on MY99 UK car.

Yep, the infamous boost cut in 2nd. It's not to protect the engine/gearbox though, it's for emmission/noise regs if I recall correctly. It can happen in any gear, but is most common in second. I find the best way to avoid it is to not drive at a constant RPM for a while and then apply WOT. Lifting off before applying WOT seems to work as does varyinf the rpm before using WOT.

Unfortunately it can't be mapped out either!

Hopefully EcuTek might be close to cracking this one .......The other option is to go the AVCR route which takes boost control away from the ECU

If they do, I'll be straight over to Bob to have that fecking thing mapped out!!! Bloody annoying and potentially dangerous if you ask me!!

Forgive my ignorance of AVCR, but wouldn't taking boost control away from the ECU interfere with the map and make the car potentially more unsafe in the event that the ECU wanted to retard boost for engine safety reasons??

You are correct.....the ecu might be trying to reduce boost to protect the engine while the AVCR merrily cranks it up !!!!

I have to rely on monitoring with guages and the fact that it's been mapped by Bob Rawle

For a classic you can get round it by fitting a different ECU, I guess this would be the same for a newage.
