Gearbox advice please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My gearbox went pop a couple of weeks ago on my 94 uk wagon and i have been trying to find a good secondhand one but nowhere has one ! now i know from previous threads that the codes need to match and if you change the box with a different code you need the diff to go with it but is it the same case with a uk car as some people have told me i can fit any uk box into my car without needing a matching rear diff ????? a couple of places have got back to me with uk boxes but they are all different codes to what i have and there not sure if i need a matching diff ?????????

Its always better to check the gearbox code as you never know if the gearbox has been changed from the car is been taken from.
Use the link below to check which one your getting.
NorthUrsalia.com: Transmission Information Spreadsheet
If you decide to get a jap version then you will need the matching rear diff.
Thats were there are 3 different type ratio rear diffs.
3.9 usually from RA models
4.11 : wrx & some early sti models
4.44 : sti model

Im currently waiting for my fourth box to be built up. The last three were all "good second hand" boxes Hopefully this one should last at least 10k without going wrong like the rest. My car is a '94 wrx saloon and the gearbox code ends 3AA. I'd guess from ticky's post that would be the one with the 4.11 diff. Hope this helps.

acording to a chart i have a 4.11 rear diff fitted which is also fitted to some wrxs , so if i can get a wrx box wich also used the 4.11 rear diff then im ok fitting it with my rear diff ??????

Don't even bother taking a chance on a second hand box. I've done it twice and both times I've ended up totally gutted and forking out twice as much as I would have if I'd just had the job done properly in the first place. Simply call David at API, he'll arrange to collect your old knackered box and for £650+VAT or thereabouts you'll have it back in a week or so rebuilt to new spec, ready to bolt straight back on. And it will work and you'll know you didn't buy off a crook.

it may be cheaper to get it repaired.
my mechanic uses Bexhill Gearboxes, who Jas from sussexscoobies is using at the moment.
I know your only in Shoreham so not a million miles away.
They charged me about £200 to change couple of bearings when 4th and 5th developed a whine. I think the whole bill including in/out, repair and a new clutch only cost me £700 (clutch parts were £250).
