Default banging noise

Hi all, new to the forum, hoping somebody can help me find a soloution!

I have a subaru imprerza 1.6 GL FWD
Ive now got a heavy rattle when i start the car from cold and when you rev it hard. its a sharp bangy rattle, like tappets but much LOUDER!

To be honest its not making any difference to the car, it drives fine, if anything i can go faster, the book says 108mph, once the rattle occured ive actually had car to 125mph!

ive tried soloutions such has tappet oil soloutions etc, too no avail, ive also changed the oil and filter, nope still no go.....

so does anyone have a solution? parts for these are har to get hold of!

thanks alot
phil

You start getting a loud, mechanical noise from your engine and you take it to 125mph! Hmmm.

big end bearings gone m8

right, when car starts it rattles (this is from cold) once hot and you turn car off then back on - its fine no rattle, but when you rev it on idle about 2500rpm it starts to rattle and gets louder as you rev higher.

sounds like tappets to me? as if it where bottom end surely i would loose power and it would constantly knock, knock, knock

How hard are these flat 4 engines to work on? to me it looks very hard and im not paying garage price as id rather get a new engine for around £350 and drop it in myself diy style. - thats if something has terribly gone wrong! (fingers crossed not)

Check out the cambelt tensioner. Remove one of the cambelt covers and run the engine. The belt should appear smooth with no flapping.

Camshaft Fooked, Not very common, But generally through oil starvation, Could be a worn Shim !!

right i have spoke to a guy about getting new engine, says check crank shaft and oil pump? so check above, and also get nice and dirty taking sump off.

could be a possibility? maybe?

I can get the engine for £308 all in inc delivery.

Well if you have /are going to check the cheap & obvious then an engine (Assuming it's Ok) for £308 is Ok.

A shim, Is used to remove/create a measured gap/clearance/space etc,i.e for Tappets & cams amongst many others
