Default Rear diff on Overrun..

Noise from the diff is echoing through the car (93WRX). Could it be something as simple as a bush that needs replacing????

Noise seems to have come on quite suddenly.

Sounds like a worn diff, where the teeth are worn and when on the overrun the wheels drive the transmission there is a "howl" / whine. Although a mech enginer at work tells me helical gears are only designed to run in 1 direction so in "reverse" they may well make a noise.

I had mine swapped for about £100 by Rally Colin, Thames Valley Motorsport and it's far quieter now. I also ad 2 piece propshaft swap[ped for a 1 piece one as I also had clicking noises which may have been prop U/Js.

Hope that helps.

So how long are Subaru rear diffs expected to last, the car has supposed to have only done 98k??

The service record backs that. Are diffs a 'weak link'?

if its the rear diff
its a wear issue
the lash (distance between gears) is off

option A find some one willing to adjust the diff (usually hard)
option B find a junk yard replacement (cheaper/easier)
