Default What oil for newly rebuilt engine

I know there are many threads and differing thoughts on this subject, but could anybody point me in the right direction for which oil to use in my 96 STi. The engine was rebuilt 7k ago by API, the car is running an exhaust and filter and is making 299.2bhp, and have been told by the rolling road guys that it is a good, strong engine. I only use the car at weekends really for a thrash. So which oil?? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

you need a min. of a 10w40 ideally full synth for that age of car, normally for a modded car such as yours we would suggest a 15w50 or 10w60 dependant on use..............

As Alyn says, Except that in my opinion; the 60 bit of the 10W60 is too thick the other way.

If you think about it 75 is gear oil and that is definitely too thick...........

We advise 10W40 or 50 15W40 or 50 PROPER brand name fully synth.

Not Halfrauds own or Motorist Discount Centre; Czechoslovakian army, reclaimed sump drainings, posing as Own Brand top quality budget oil [ You get my drift ]

Geoff, Subaru main dealers say good quality 10/40 Semi Synthetic as you will fine it will burn/use oil if you use fully synth. From a Subaru Mechanic of 20 years experiance

Don't put 0W anything in an Impreza Turbo, it will break the engine.

10W as a lowest figure in my experience.

Ha ha, thought I would get a few different answeres here! Thanks for everybody's advice, the feedback is much appreciated! Oilman recomended a 10-50 fully synthetic, but then I have also been told by my local subaru main dealer that shell helix semi synthetic is best, as wrx has said. I am so confused!!! David, as you rebuilt the engine and did such a fine job, can I presume from you that I couldn't go far wrong using Silkoline Pro S 10-50?

In my opinion you would be taking an unnecessary risk by running that on that grade oil.

I know the oil tecchies will poo-poo that because of the ' esters and polymers ' and all that stuff.

Plain fact is, when we see a late model busted engine it is always on 0W or 5W. We don't see too many yet, because the car is relatively new and still covered by warranty in many cases.

BUT, given the proportion of earlier cars, we don't see too many broken ones that are on
10 W or 15W, despite the sheer numbers of GC8 Subaru on the road.

Good luck David APi

Thanks again for everybody's views. Just wondering what filters are best to use. Do you get what you pay for or are they all much of a muchness? Or is it best to use a genuine subaru item? Thnaks again!

I'd say genuine Subaru only. For £6 or £7(depending where you get one) why risk anything else ?

And I use 10w50 Silkolene Pro-s oil. As far as I'm aware it's some of the best quality oil you can get,no matter what anyone tells you
