1st thing to do is read the CEL code (Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia browse tells you how) and see what that says.

If the MAF is sending data causing a CEL then I'd be looking at changing it rather than just cleaning it. If it's a MY99 then change it anyway as they were a particularly bad year for MAFS.

I had a similar prob on my STI RA. Turned out to be dry solder joints inside the MAF box. Four wires if I remember correctly. Resoldered, silicon sealed the box - working fine ever since!! Check this first - may save you some coin.

opened up the maf top all was well so bought a new 2nd hand one on flea bay just waiting for it to turn up also today cleaned the idle control valve with some carb cleaner was well grubby inside full of carbon deposits but i guess i wont get the benifits of that until new maf is installed. Would i need to reset the ecu before starting the engine with the new maf installed or will it be ok? Whats the best way to reset the ecu by draining it or by connecting the green and black connectors under the steering column and doing it that way? Cheers.
