Default pro's and con's on a 6sp sti7 and a helical cut gearbox

afternoon all
like is states,
im have around 370 -390 bhp tuned into my car, as its a my99 uk turbo i need to swap, upgrade the the gearbox, ive been quoted around 2500 for the 6speed gear box from an sti8 to be fitted including vat etc, and 3300 for a helical cut 4 gear set to be installed into my existing box,
just want to know if the 800 on top is really worth it,
so if you had a upgrade like this please state what you had done, and where and roughtly how much you paid, and what you think of it , thanks alot ppl
mark,

Having driven both,

I would say I prefered the 5 Speed, I suppose it all depends on your driving style, With the 6 speed I found second gear too short when coming fast off of a roundabout (hits the limiter at 62mph) and with the uk 5 Speed goes all the way to 70 mph in Second which will see you onto the straight making it easy to crunch into 3rd. Obviously couldnt go any faster then as I hit the National speed limit!

I think it's the general opinion that the 5 speed is the better option, i went for a 6 speed purely because of the cost of the 5 speed kit, unfortunatly couldn't afford £3K+ for a PPG kit and couldn't find a used PPG box for sale.

£2500 for an STI 8 box conversion seems a little expensive to me, should be more like £1800-£2000 for an non-DCCD box IMO, but can be done even cheaper than that if your lucky

Rubbish, I've done it on my own, twice!!

But the engine was out at the time. It was bloody hard work though especially as it was on the driveway with axle stands in the pissing rain.

thanks mark,
It's cheaper if you source the box and other bits yourself then just pay someone to fit it for you, i was only charged slightly more than a clutch change to fit mine (and this needed doing anyway, so didn't really cost anything)
One of the other guys in the welsh section paid just over £1k for a Jap box (think it was DCCD aswell) delivered from a well known breakers, just need a prop shaft.
If you can pick one up privately or off ebay you may get one even cheaper, i did

So if your lucky could cost as little as:

Box and bits - £1100
Fitting - £350
Sale of your old 5 speed box - -£200

= total cost of £1250
