Pressure in Water system??

Pressure in Water system??
i have a fair bit of water pressure in my system. The heads have just been rebuilt and just had the head gaskets done. Start up was fine, car ran with no issues. Took it to the end of the road and the temp started to rise, then it blew my heater matrix. (NIGHTMARE!!)
I am getting quite a bit of pressure in the system and the water is constantly flowing out of the expansion tank once the system is hot. Im sure i have a hefty airlock. Would an airlock cause the pressure and the water bubble out. One side of the rad was hot, one was cold. One pipe of the matrix was hot, other was cold.
If so is there a knack to filling the system??
