Default Which Turbo for 300+bhp - Bugeye WRX

As it says, now I've got the car working just about properly (just need another restrictor for the wastegate, having dropped the last one, to replace my home-made one which is causing a little bit of surge at WOT) I suspect it won't be long before I crave even more power.

To date the spec is standard except for some Samco hoses, an STi panel filter, a decat third cat, blitz nur spec R system.

Also sat in the garage to go on are a larger TMIC, a walbro 255 fuel pump and a GGR Induction kit with cold air feed and an SPT heatshield. And before everyone says don't do it, I like the induction noise.

As I understand it the WRX turbo is maxed out at about 280-290bhp so if I want to crack 300bhp I know I'll need to change the turbo, the question now is which one.

I'll fit a decat up-pipe and sports cat at the same time but the ones I'm considering are the TD05-16G and VF34. Also what other mods will I need to do, ie will the standard injectors handle over 300bhp. As this is my first turboed car I'd be grateful for any pointers so I can get it all done prior to a re-map.

Anyone know what the max I can get from the standard bugeye injectors?

IMHO If you absolutely want to break the 300bhp barrier, but don't want to compromise on response significantly, go for a VF35.

What makes this one so much better than the others?

Better than the VF34 and TD0516G in terms of spool characteristics. It won't give you as much top end though, so depends what you want. All will do over 300 with the supporting mods easily. Generally, you pick the smallest/quickest spooling turbo for your power requirements. That would be the VF35.

Td04 hybrid may be an option for you too, but you might just get in under 300 with that. Like I said, depends what you want.

I will have a Turbo Dynamics MD304 turbo for sale shortly, proven 330-350bhp bolt on turbo with excellent characteristics. Do a search on here - this turbo is highly rated. PM me if interested.

VF35 sounds good, ideally I would like to crack the 300 mark, but I'm not after huge figures, something useable for the road, but enough fun for the track too is the plan. I suspect the turbo and remap will be a winter project with the handling being something I'm in the process of assembling bits for now.

Cheers for the advice. It gives me an idea of what I'm now looking for

vf35 everytime i'm running 320bhp and 405nm of torque at only 1.25 bar in my WRX and it doesn't really spool that much later then tdo4 but hammers all the way to the redline!!

What other mods have you used to support this?

Not much difference between the VF34 & VF35, probably wouldn't notice the difference on the road IMHO, i have a VF34 and am running 333bhp & 325lbft, starts spooling from 2500rpm with max boost just over 3000rpm
heres my spec

VF34
STi intercooler
STi injectors
Ported and wrapped standard headers
Full decat
and of course a remap

As I voted for the TD05 16G I thought I'd just mention that the TD05 (and the VF35 which are pretty much the same IMHO) will give the WRX clutch and gearbox a pretty tough time...... !!

All the above turbo's mentioned will have to be tuned to stop you eating the WRX drivetrain unless you are lucky or are a very sympathetic driver LOL

The clutch has had a good run, so if the winter re-work results in a destroyed clutch I'll just have to explain to the missus that it needs a clutch and flywheel, and that lighter ones are cheaper
