Default Cam Belt Tensioner

Does anyone have a pic of this or able to tell me which bit of the motor this is? Car going in for a new belt tomorow and recieved wisdom says they'll probably say they need to swap the cambelt tensioner too, i just want to make sure that i do get a new one if i pay for it!

thanks,

5t.

It’s behind the cam belt covers and is very easy to change once the belt is of as i am sure they will do if it needs it. You can always ask to see your old tensioner.

i thought about asking but i want to make sure it is mine heh. been ripped before and i'm sure the dealership in question is good but i am a bit paranoid i guess.

fav trick is taking the spare out and seeing if they tick the "spare ok" box on their full inspection sheet. if they can't be bothered to open the boot to make sure on that what else do they skimp on etc...

If the original tensioner is re-used, the correct procedure must be followed to re-compress the plunger. MAKE SURE THE GARAGE IS AWARE OF THIS PROCEDURE.

Mark it with a perm marker pen, just enough that you know where it is, then check it or do as John says, ask to see the old one

If it's at fault they normally knock for a few seconds when first started. This is due to the tensioner loosing tension i.e overnight. Then re-priming when you start up. The knock is the tensioner bouncing off another part of the engine casting.

However, they have been known to fail after a belt has been changed due to them being reset.

Personally I would fit a new one anyway, just to be sure.
