LJF, your car diesel'd. The excess oil caused too much pressure which popped the piston rings, allowing pressurised oil to escape into the cylinders, where it was burnt just like diesel oil. A diesel will keep running whilever there is oil it can burn, and so continues even if you turn off the ignition until all the sump oil has gone, then the engine seizes. In petrol engines it may still damage the rings and start burning oil, but it will stop when the ignition is turned off as the spark is removed. It's better to have a bit too little oil than a bit too much. DRAIN SOME OFF !
PS. If a diesel ever keeps running after you turn off the ignition, put it straight into top gear and drop the clutch. Better a stall than a total seizure, you might get away with rings and linings instead of a complete block and internals.
