Default Exhaust db Test

Does anyone know where I could get this done to test the noise of my exhaust ? before I investigate how to lower the noise.

Have tried a few places, but don't want to pay for a trackday to find out I am exceeding the noise limit.

cheers

Most trackday organisers seem willing to test cars for free at a trackday (for future potential participants) if you ring them up and ask nicely saying you're not sure about your noise and want to be sure before booking a track day. Javelin are certainly obliging.

Alternatively you could buy a meter for about £15 and test yourself. 4500 rpm at 50 cm and 45 degress horizontally from tail pipe. If you're in the Yorkshire area Rill on here has a meter. Limits vary.

I have an 03STi remapped with Prodrive sports cat and Scoobyclinic 3" middle and rear with 4.5 inch tailpipe and this is well OK at about 98-99 db. Rill has 2.5 Magnex decat and just a rear box and this does 101-102 db although subjectively it doesn't sound any noisier than mine. Noise measurement is an inexact science.

Default Re: Testing

I have tried Santa Pod with no luck, a few tuners and rolling road places

My car is MY97 v3 Type R 2.5 running 450bhp with a decat exhaust 2.5 (old style H&S Scoobysport system & Megan headers)

Anyone with a noise meter willing in measure my exhaust in and around London (West London) ?.

Ah. Would probably be able to hear that in Yorkshire. I see why you might think it'll need to be quietened down. Not so sure about finding a cheap meter, I'll do a bit of reaserch and let you know if I find anything.

Try ringing Javelin or Bookatrack and ask nicely.

Default Noise Meter

Had a look on Flea bay there a few that measure upto 120 db (Uncomfortably Loud - Military jet aircraft take-off from aircraft carrier with afterburner at 50 ft . . . 130 dB) or 130 db which should be sufficient in theory to measure the sound from exhaust

Was goign to ring Silverstone and see if they have one there as I am going to be up at Santa Pod in August

Otherwise it is a rather long way to get to any track really without any certainty of passing !

Anyone with any ideas how it quieten exhaust without loss of power / or how people with similar power levels get away with running on trackdays

cheers

We have noise testing facilities if you're local to North London/Essex.

Go to Bookatrack website and go to their shop. They do noise meter hire for £9 inc P&P each way. Should help you out.

For some noise attenuation you could try:

1. Some open steel gauze jubilee clipped over end of exhaust.
2. Clamp a 1/2 " wide bar across the mouth of the exhaust.
3. If tail pipe is 4 1/2 " buy a universal exhaust plug, I think TSL sell these.

Made a bar (as in 2 above) for mate's car and dropped reading from 102 to 98.

Scoobyclinic did a test in the same exhaust I have (as in previous post) and the plug reduced peak power by 20 bhp.

If you exceed track day noise limits they won't let you out. I've seen it happen and you lose your money.

Default RE: Exhust

Mocom thank you for the offer but it work out to be 160 mile round trip.

The hire of the noise meter is a good solution, but I am probbly going to buy one as it would only cost a littler bit more from Flea bay.

I can hen use it to test the outcome of modifications to quiten the noise of the exhaust.

I'm not a fan of the bungs or bars across the tail pipe as you pointed out it reduces power. Recently speaking to someone in trde who hs rollers says it effect his power by 60 bhp by adding the bung.

cheers

I have one and am based in West London
I had exactly the same issue so bought one for £30 from Maplins - its accurate to +/- 0.5 dbs and was about the same as the ones they used at Brands

I'm based in Osterly - most weekends!!

T-R and Fang that must be a result for scoobynetters. T-R I'm afraid you're bound to be too noisy and a cheap solution has to hurt your power - sorry. Anyway how do you get on with your neighbours and the local law.

Cheers, Dccy.

I had a HKS Hyper which on my spec was 104.5dbs unmuffled

I now have a different exhaust that is about 92dbs's

With the HKS you aint getting on most tracks - the Bung is a joke for power and best avoided on hot days

Best to go to Brands Hatch - 105dbs (except evenings when its at 102db'S)

Default RE: Exhaust

No Issues with the Law or neighbours (for now anyway).

I've had people where i use to live ask about he noise but what annoys them more is when its left to run on the turbo timer.

So I think as long as you re as respectful as possible it should not be a problem - just turn it round and ask them if their dog ever stops barking !!!

Fng - what spec and power you running ?

I just drive the last mile or so gently then turn off straight away, anyway if I leave my car idling the oil temperature rises. It might just be me but leaving engines running at anything other than a track day even annoys me let alone the neighbours.
