Necessary tools for an in-car kit.

I'm a newcomer to Subarus, and new cars in general. I've been driving an '87 Volvo 240 since I was 16 (that was 11 year ago!). I switched locations and jobs, and with the new job comes a requirement to have a car that's a bit newer than 20 years old. The job's in Denver, so I thought some AWD would come in handy in the mountains. A Subaru Impreza was the only choice.
That being said, I'm probably going to buy the car tonight. I'm used to doing my own work on cars, and I usually travel with a tool kit. What do you take with you in yours? I'm curious if there are any strange nuances or problem areas with these cars that would require different tools (flare wrenches, torx screwdrivers, metric/english/both sockets, etc.).
Also, has any aftermarket manual (haynes, chilton, etc.) proven to be more useful than others?

Chilton manual is the only hard copy manual available and not bad actually.
You must carry a 12/14/17/19mm A/F comination spanner set.
A good set of 'Mole Grips' (we call them in the UK, no idea in the USA)
Cross head screw driver + flat blade for hose clips etc
Selection of cable ties (you call them tie-wraps I think)
Thin protective gloves as nearly everything is very hot in the engine bay.
Small cheap 1/4 or 3/8 socket set/ratchet etc.
There are no Torx on a classic Impreza.
Job done.
Oh, and welcome to the Scoobynet!
Graham.
