Default engine light on. car nearly cuts out at idle and loss of power on boost

the problem started today when i put my foot down a bit and was pulling away, i had a sudden loss of power, felt like i was about to be flew out of the windowscreen!!
anyway i carried on driving slowly, checked oil and water temp and they were normal so i tried to put my foot down again, however when the car comes on boost its like it is spluttering, the power is not there it is very jerky.
also when i stop the revs go from 1000rpm and drop down to pretty much nothing and then go back up again. sometimes it cuts out.
any ideas what this could be?
cheers

Default MAF prices

I have just had to replace mine ( it is a 3pin connector not 4 ) and cost me £320.
Some of the early cars have a MAF sensor where you can change the sensor module for around £60 I think.

its the early cars where you have to swap the whole unit costing stupid money, mine is a 94 sti wagon and cost me 256 quid for the lot. after i think 97 onwards you can replace just the piece that is the sensor itself without the need to replace the housing
