If you want 300 i'd see Andy F for the TD04 hybrid: best possible spool at that level.

If you want a bit more, try the VF35 almost as good spool as stock, but can produce 320+

My vote is for the TD05-18G. Spools like a VF 35 (which I had before) but keeps on pulling far longer and harder.

TD04 Hybrid as said is good for 300, what should you expect from the 18 G ?

The 18G is good for around 380 with the supporting mods of course.

Will the 18g spool/respond the same regardless of which Scoob it's bolted onto ? eg Classic, Newage WRX, Newage STi etc ?

A few folk have said the 18Gs are a tad laggy, although the power it provides can't be denied ! Both of these points make sense - it's a bigger turbo after all.

You may need a new gearbox on a UK classic if you go for the 18G.

You can't go far wrong with a VF turbo I switched to a VF28 off of a low milage P1 added to a Hybrid FMIC and I've got 330BHP and it's a lot of fun, quick spool up, I get 1bar by 3000 and 1.3 by 3500.

18G is way too big for 300bhp. In my opinion if your after 300 and no more then the TD04 hybrid is the best choice. It wont be cheap compared to the other options though. A TD05 16g will see you to 320-340 depending on supporting mods. Cant speak for the VF's as I have never owned or seen one. the 18g is overkill for 300bhp. At 300 spool is the important thing as there are lots of turbo's that can make this level but you really want one that will make the car as driveable as possible.
Just my 1 pence.

Cheap VF35 or TD05H-16G.

Agree with most of what you say Borat. Re cost, with the TD04 Hybrid you can do without the injectors needed on the other upgrade turbos (even though I didn't LOL), which offset the cost of the fully reconditioned turbo, which is the reason it costs more.
