Default Cant remove bung for Oil temp any suggestions?

Hi,

Im trying to fit the gauge sender for my oil temp gauge but cannot remove the bung from above cyl 3, the hole in the nut just rounded straight out.

Any suggestions for removing it?

Thats a tricky one!

You could always get a sandwich plate and locate it by the filter

Are you sure it has completely rounded. I did mine last week and i thought it had rounded but it was just the tip of it that had. I Hammered the 8mm socket drive into it and used a cheaterbar and it cracked it no problem.

Other than that its not the best plug for trying to get out so i would favour the sandwich plate as well tbh.

Its deffinatly right out! I have hammered the socket deep in and it still wont hold.

Sandwich plates sounds like a good idea, im due an oil/filter change anyway. a much better idea than a sump adaptor and i dont fancy removing the intercooler again. Its so hard to fit the black plastic pipe back onto the turbo. i think the next time I take it off im going to replace the y hose with a silicone hose.

Where can I get a sandwich plate from? Ive seen the one on scoobyworld but dont fancy one with 4 connectors, i plan on an oil pressure gauge to so one with 2 holes would suffice.

Probably doesn't help you any more, but halfords sell 8mm allen key socket bits (1/2" drive, I believe). It's labelled as (I *think*) 8mm sump plug socket and it was 3.49 from memory. Mine came straight out with this coupled to a couple of extensions and a ratchet

sandwich plates wilth sender in sometimes foul on the headers or sump.
you could get a new sump plug drill and tap a 1/4 bsp thread in it and use that.

I bought a brand new 8mm hex socket bit to do the job with with the bung being hard to get to but this was still no go.

ian, im sure that I could get the sandwich plate to sit in plate without fouling on the headers or the sump, i would prefur having the sandwich plate than having a sender hanging out of the bottom of the sump, thats asking for trouble IMO

i'm just relaying problems i had when i got the sandwich plate, ended up putting in in no3 cylinder but i used a snap on tool and had no problems on a clod engine block.
As yours is rounded you only have possibly the 2 mentioned options
or you could weld a hex socket in the rounded plug and try that.

I'll be attempting this very soon on an 05 car.

I was wondering if it would be easier with a warm to hot engine, my theory being the alloy block will expand more than the steel bung..?!

Any thoughts..?

Jason it should come out okay if the allen key is in good condition and you keep it square.
