Default how much time to change a water pump

Need to change a water pump on my 92wrx, engine is in situ, how much time should I set aside for this and is it easier to remove the rad for better access or does it not make much difference?

Cheers

Autodata says 2.2 hours for the cam belt, so probably about 3 hours. that's without removing the rad. it can be done when the rad is in, but it is easier if it''s not. I'd put a new cam belt on whilst its off and check and renew all the idler pulleys/tensioner if needed

No air con makes life easier as you have one less fan to deal with so you have more space. However if it’s your first time i would suggest removing the rad so you have a clear view of the cam pulleys and that they are set correctly.

yes air con in place so may as well remove the rad then. I also have a fmic, is it worth removing that as well (mind you dont suppose that will gain me much), will renew the timing belt, hopefully the idlers etc will be okay but I have a spare engine with all the bits on sat in the garage so I can butcher from that if needed.

With regards the timing, the top right hand cam will rotate slightly when everything is lined up and the belt is removed, is it just a case of using a ring spanner to turn it back slightly when replacing the belt?

In safe position right hand bank will be on cam be careful not to let them spin of. To get them lined up just rotate clock wise you can use a spanner or ratchet the weight of this also helps keeps them in line if you need to.

I would suggest 4 hours.

Cambelt swap + rad out/in + coolant refill + waterpump swap

Factor in cost of gasket and coolant.

find the correct torque for the (M6) bolts, it's very easy to strip the threads in the block when changing..

Can the oil pump be cleaned up // modified at all whilst everything is off? Dont want to get a new one as am planning on rebuilding a spare engine that will have a modified pump so I dont really want to double the costs

Just recd it now, it is a pattern part from solid autos. the quality feels and looks okay, but cant really compare until I have the other one off. (may remove the one from the spare engine to compare)
Only problem I had was the gasket was torn!! luckily I spoke with graham goode and they are sending me out a replacement tonight, along with a turbo to upipe gasket (may as well put my tdo5 on at the weekend as well, gets me out of decorating!!)

can see why its a 4 hr job, done about 2 hours tonight on it, got the timing belt exposed. Rad off, fmic pipework out of the way etc etc. Tomorrw I will get the timing lined up and remove the belt and then change the pump, hope the tensioner is okay.

Bit bloody hard getting the crank pulley off though, ended up in 5 gear, and I jammed the brake pedal down took some going, luckily missus will be in when I redo it!

(just hope I get the timing right though, first time of changing one)

the fun bit for me was replacing the actual water pump, getting it in place with the gasket on, hmm bit tricky. However a little bit of glue held the manifest in place and viola.

Cam timing was actually out by 1 or 2 teeth (cant remember now) when I removed the belt, so that may explain why my turbo seemed late coming in (tiny vf10), but it is hopefully spot on now (was all lined up when I replaced the belt), car starts and idles fine, and seems smoother to drive as well but that may be in my head.

Cheers for the help guys
