Hi...i have a muched loved 96 Mcrae imprezza...after recent service i've been told that compression is down on NO4 cyclinder. i have been told this is a common problem with early models due to a cooling issue's. i have been advised that a engine exchange is my best option but i don't want the same problem to happen again. i would like to replace it with a newer(model) engine but don't know if this is possilble..can anyone advise on a good solution to my problem
many thanks

only the 92-98 engine will fit unless you want to get into swapping looms and ECU's, even then there are some differences. 92-96 are the same, 97-98 are the same.
How many miles has it done?
I would suggest a full rebuild with ACL bearings and either new pistons (std or forged) if it is 60k+, you should have a fairly strong engine then. if you put a cheap 2nd hand engine in, you don't know it's history.
Speak to David at API or Paul @ Zen, both are known on here and have outstanding reputations.

You've been told compresion is low? How low? Really you need to know all the cylinder pressures to make a decision. Whats the car doing? or what running dificulties do you have?
Did you just take it in for a service or did you report a problem to the garage that prompted them to check the pressures?

Thanks for the advice, My Mcrae has 95k and the only running difficulty i have is when on boost in 3rd gear i get only what i can only describe as a slight stutter between 4 and 5 thou...rev's. The garage said that compreesion on 4 is only slighty down but as i'm not using any oil it's not a major issue yet, but i should keep a close eye on my oil level cause when it go's it go's

That sounds more like a fuel cut or dodgy coil packs, it's certainly the right rev range for it.
Call me on Tuesday 28th and l'll talk you through an ECu check which'll identify any electronic poroblems that may be there.
