Which years did they use shims and which years did they use hydraulic buckets, or are all years shimmed? I'm interested as my 100k mile turbo has got top end noise when its cold.

I believe 1997 was the cross-over year on UK cars, certainly before that was hydraulic.

JDM Stis not sure.

One of my hydraulic buckets clicks every now and then.

I took it to a garage and it was running as sweet as a nut for half an hour, but he said, you can get to them if you undo the mounts and twist the engine.

you can do it without touching the engine mounts, once the rocker covers are removed there is bags of room.. Its a fiddly job working at an angle though.

Not that its possible to twist the engine that much anyway, its still attached to the gearbox

Mines is a 97'R uk turbo and appears to have buckets shims. I think there might be an insert on the top at the cam side though. I will check it out later this week when I take them out.

As [DAVEY] says its not an engine out job. It looks tight down there but once all the crap is out the way its ok as long as you don't have banana hands.

exvaux where abouts are you located as I could lend a hand/show you how to check. I am in east Kilbride near Glasgow.

im between troon and killie so not actually that far from you.reason i wanted to know was more a case of if it is an engine out job to fix the tappets might as well get the engine rebuilt while it was out,are there any specialists in this area you know of that could do it,and not s+s?

Its defo not an engine out job anyways. If I am down at my garage tomorrow I will take some pics to show you the layout/space I have. Engine out sounds a lot too but its not really I can have the engine out, clutch changed, and back in again in one day.

I dont know of anybody around this area that would take on a rebuild of a scooby engine. Maybe The Garage in Wishaw but they are mega bucks. If s+s is the place down your way that used to do twin 40 conversions to loads of cars then I would say no to them, my mate had a conversion done with loads of promises and it was pish.

I always meant to when I was rebuilding but was always kept busy doing other things, it's a bit of an embarrassment actually . I am a bit of a tool for not doing it and I now kick myself for it. I hope no one else looks at the pics.
