hey all,
Been down to the Subaru dealer aka "the stealers" after the OBD light came on and have been diagnosed with a faulty "Fuel Air Sensor" which needs replacing.
Been quoted £360 for this including VAT and fitting. The sensor alone was £279.
Does this sound right??
Any views would be appreciated as i'm new to the scooby scene.
BTW it's for a 2002 Impreza GX-Got to start somewhere right?

LOL, just had the same thing (only yesterday), they're quoting for the whole airbox, and not just the MAF cartridge, which can be had for >£100 simple diy fit..!
Do you have the part number to hand..?

No mate, didn't catch the part number
Spoke to my mechanic to see if he could do the work for me and he said it can only be done at Subaru because of the engine management codes.

I'd get a MAF casette from Bob Rawle (BR Developments) for just less than £100 and fit it yourself. I'm a complete numpty at mechanics and even I can do it (with the right screwdriver).
The CEL should go out after a few starts as the ECU recognises the correct signals from the new MAF. If not then just get the CEL removed at dealers...free if on a good day but costs around £30 !!
Cheap as chips LOL

Right, so if i go to BR Developments and get a MAF casette (what exactly is this) And fit it this should be the same as or pretty much the same as getting the fuel air sensor replaced??
If this is the case i'll give them a bell on Monday and find out the finer details.
with CEL, this has gone out and switches on and off freely. Could the be due to anything??
cheers

Ah Ha !! I was wrong then ![Frown](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Air fuel sensor = Lambda sensor then (02 sensor)
I just assumed air fuel sensor was the Mass air flow sensor (MAF)
Pseudo wideband lambda sensors are about £180 I think and again a simple swap .

you know what, i thought so.
Just googled it and had a read up on MAF's and it sounded nothing like what i was told at Subaru.
Question still stands then. . .£360 a lot for a new fuel-air / fuel ratio sensor?

MidLife- what you just wrote, can i clarify. . .
You have a fuel air/ratio sensor and an O2 sensor?
Reason i ask is because i know the O2 sensor was replaced about 4 weeks back. the techy said this to me and said they may have both been duff, so now for the replacement of the fuel air sensor.
confusing lol

Comon fault on the newage - I replaced mine with a seconhand one for £100.
As you say the part new is dealer only and £300 +
If you want the details of where I got mine send me a PM
p.s. David at API was going to source me one too so he's worth a try

There are a shedload of sensors on the Newage cars......most of which are not really essential !
As you might have gathered we are a bit confused !!
Ask the dealer for the OBD II codes read off your ECU and post them here![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
They should be something like "P0420" LOL
