usually the boost control solenoid. clean it in test mode along with the pipework with aerosol brake cleaner. if that doesn't work, get a new one.

interesting both of our cars are 2000 classics,
i saw some where about changing it for a 3 port solenoid, just wondering as i one from an old 95 i had ,
how would i go about changing, where does the 3rd one come in to play ??
thanks

Happened on my W reg 2000 turbo, was the solenoid, just needed cleaning out, though if you have any modifications that can cause overboosting which is similar.

As you say you have the Prodrive performance pack then I assume you are running on super unleaded? If so then being a 2000 car the most likely candidate would be the air flow sensor under-reading as they are a bit rubbish. If this sensor hasn't been replaced in the last couple of years then you should probably replace it as a matter of course ( around £70 from main dealer ).

Phil, your last post saying the turbo doesn't seem to be coming in at all does point more towards the boost solenoid sticking.
Putting a 3-port boost solenoid on a 2000 car requires a re-map of the ECU and the finer control it gives over the 2-port solenoid is only of any practical use if you are going for some serious tuning

When I first bought my 2000 car it was standard and seemed to drive alright, apart from being a bit gutless ( problem with all standard UK cars! ). When I stuck the Prodrive kit on it would hold back particularly when flooring it in 5th at around 100mph. Sometimes did it in 4th but not always, I assume because there is less load on the engine. Anyhow, a new Maf sensor solved it and smoothed out a slightly rough feel during gentle driving which until then I'd thought was normal.

Probably not the problem but its worth noting the TD04 spikes like a **** in 5th at about 80.. I was having real problems with fuel cut, boost gauge was showing 1.4-1.6 bar ! I've fitted a HKS EVC now, set it to 1.35bar and its spot on
