Cv joint-someone must have the answers
For a newage my03 STI o/s specifically.
1. How is the outer cv joint held together...circlip, just held on splines and how is it split ?
2. How is the inner cv joint held into the gearbox and how is it removed?
3. If I pull out the cv from the gearbox will it **** oil everywhere.
4. Do the stretch cv boots actually work ?
I have searched and searched but most answers are just general regarding cv joints and not specific to the newage STI.
Thanks.

When I did my front outer boot I worked it on from the inside,
Remove the shaft from g/box by punching out the roll pin (some later models dont have these).
Pull back the inner boot from cv cup & scoop a bit of grease out, you should see a spring clip running in the around the inner edge of the cup, flick this out & the shaft + rollers will come out of the cup.
If you want to the rollers can be removed from the end of the shaft but I did the next bit with them still in place.
Cut the outer boot off & soak your new boot in boiling water to make it all soft & it should stretch over the remaining parts of the shaft & just pull down to the outer cv,you may want to tape up your shaft to prevent dirt getting in the new boot while you do this.

Forgot to mention, if the front of the car is high enough you shouldn't lose much oil, if any. As for the stretch boots, the 1 I used was a normal replacement & that stretched enough.

2. depends on year as there is a change over point on the sti.. either pulls straight out of the box with the small splined stub attached to the shaft (you will probably have to remove the suspension to hub bolts to allow the hub to move over far enough to drop the shaft out.
Personnally I remove the shaft from the car to work on it.. large nut on the end of the shaft wheel end, undo the suspension bolts (mark them first as they effect geometry). Look at the gearbox end and rotate the shaft if it is the type with a roll pin you will see the pipe / hole in the end of the shaft..
pull shaft out of gearbox or off of stub on gearbox..
3. if it is the roll pipe type then no oil will come out, if it is the stub in box type then I would drain the oil first but not tried with oil still in.
4. by stretch do you mean the glue on ones? if so then yes but not long term
The only STi specific difference is the stub at the gearbox end.
If time is a problem then buy a secondhand shaft.. and just swap it.
