Default odd coolant temp readings

hi all, got a strange problem with my 98 uk impreza turbo. when driving the tempreture gauge moves up and down like the rev counter, not all the time but every now and then, most of the time it sits in the centre where it normally does.

The engine dosnt actually get "hot hot" fans kick in then turn off as usual, I think maby a loose connection but dont know where to loo. any advice would be a winner!! thanks baz

On the water cross pipe you have two senders, one for the water temp gauge and the other for the water temp signal, its possible this could be faulty if there is no problems with the car over heating check the connection on the temperature gauge sender.
