Will a UK Turbo MY00 gearbox be able to take a TD05 18G?
Does anybody run a TD05 18G on a late classic gearbox?
How does it hold up, anybody had an 18G eat the gearbox?
Cheers,
The Hoff

I broke 3rd in a MY00 UK box with a smaller 16g @ 1.6 Bar, after quite a few hard launches.
Treat the box with some sympathy and it may survive the 18 for a while

Hi
I currently have a 18G with STi V4 heads e.t.c still using the standard EARLY classic gearbox, gearbox was rebuilt by API a couple of years ago so it was as good as it could be.
So no it wont eat the gearbox as long as you have some mechanical sympathy.

currently running between 305BHP/305ftlb - 320BHP/316ftlb, depending on who's rollers. On a UK MY00 Gearbox.
Have had no problems and car has been running like this for at least 12-18 months.
Wouldn't want to push it though beyond 320ftlb which the 18g should be able to achieve. Although alot of other things are at there limit at this level if all still stock.

I have just fitted a TD05/06 18g to my 99 Uk classic; but have yet to have it mapped. So we'll see how well it holds up once mapped at 1.5bar!!
No funds available for an uprated box if it does shat itself though, so it will be credit card time!!

My money is on the 18G smashing the gearbox if tuned to its potential, but a sympathetic mapper and a gentle driving style might keep it in one piece.....for a while!
Budget for a 6 speed from a new age as a replacement sooner rather than later, I'd say!

My MD304 managed to strip the box last November so its been rebuilt after that. I know the 18G has more torque lower down so was concerned that it would do the same. Thing was that I have had the MD304 on there for about 3 years now and its been fine which made me think the box was just worn and gave up.

From: Newcastle. 330bhp-289lb/ft @ 1bar boost - 12.4s @ 105mph
329bhp/289lbft was enough to see off my old gearbox just before the SSO. That box had lasted about 18 month.
Now got an AS Performance supplied 'hybrid' box in. Goes well.
If, (when), I break this one, I think it'll be time for a PPG gear kit.

If the turbo is used as its meant to be it wont last long, mine lasted just over a week. But what a week If you want a bigger turbo why be sympathetic?
Have to admit that I changed to the Blobeye STi after lots of money spent on the classic, I think I spent nigh on £16,000 in a year, now much happier with my Blob. Certainly wouldnt go back.

I was just about to say that the only way it would survive is if you drive it like a nun, then I saw your name
No one wants to nurse a car along, do they? That ****sosaxochavwagon buzzes you at the lights so what are you going to do? Drive like a nun because your box will explode or nail it????

Its a lottery as to when the box will go, but mines has been fine for the last 18 months/20k miles. It does get used now and then.....YouTube - Impreza Sport Wagon 12.45 Seconds Quarter Mile. Standard Uk engine/box. So until then I just enjoy it.

If you are going to do track days/santa pod/time attack/drive like a loon all the time, then yes you will put your gearbox under stress, more so the more the power output.
In my local subaru club there are several classics and newage's pushing the 400Bhp threshold on 18g's, 20g's and MD321's all on standard gearboxes and no-one has blown a box that I know of. These cars are pushed from time to time, but certainly not given any special gentle treatment!
You dont have nurse it 100% of the time, but on the otherhand thrashing it 100% of the time will not do it any favours
