Question MAF problems on new age with high horses?

Hey all,

Just wonder if anyone is having MAF problems with high horses? Do they tend to be less reliable once you reach a certain level?

I'm currently running 2.5L with 482/493 and I may have a MAF problem...

i'm suprised your not running aftermarket ecu at that sort of power which would do away with one

higgy on sidc is running a bugeye with maf on a 2.0 running a GT30R making 515/450 and has no problems. I have been in his car and by god it's fast.

personaly i think you'd be best of ditching the ecu and putting on an autronic or Motec etc, saves risking the engine for a MAF if it does kill them quickly

I can understand you saying that ...first time I took my misses out in her with 482/493 she instantly screamed in my ear...ouch, can still 'ear it ringing now.
I just wonder if my running of the car in the garage, she sometimes wants to almost stall, engine dips to idle, then up a little, then down, give her (right foot) revs and she's fine although it can happen again...Its happened twice now in two runs to warm her up.
My mapper said its to do with the wild cams (ecu chasing the correct mix as cam profile has over lap below 2500) but I wonder if the MAF could be on the way out?

sounds very much like tha standard ecu just can't cope with the wild cams. the mapper will know exactly whats going on with the car so i'd go on what he/she says

Cheers Tidgy, the only reason I'm asking is that, well, in my job I very rarely find one item as being the cause, normally there's more than one and combine to be a problem.

I'll have another word with my trusty mapper.

One thing that makes me wonder MAF though is that fact that she'll start to drop revs even when running above 2,500 revs - the level at which the cams no longer become a problem as she runs "clean"? Hence my wonders I guess

has it just started happening or has it always been a problem? - Im sure Bob would of noticed a dodgy maf on the remap

my bugeye has always done weird things with idleing since I started tunning it - nothings ever gone wrong but never been "stock"

Hey Rich...

No, from memory I dont think its done this before ever...thing is it matches another guys issues exactly. Since I always run the car in the garage above the lumpy revs range, ie over 2,500, shouldn't the ecu be happy as the mix? It seemed to me like the engine didn't know where my throttle was positioned as she just suddenly drops to idle (doesn't stall), then increases revs, then drops, then increase until you put your foot down more and revs build again.

Oh, just to add, I've always had the revs fluctuate slightly, say 100 rpm, in neutral but I'm 90% sure this drop to idle is a new thing.

Anyone else running OE ecu and wild cams?

I've been in touch with Bob again, he confirms maf was reading fine on last map. I'm now going to clean it and Bob wants some pics just to check it over - tops as usual . The extra good news is it seems my water injection setup hasn't been working properly (due to blockage) from the start of mapping so Bob thinks she's got more potential....lovely word that!

No problem with the std ECU or new age mafs at over 500bhp as long as the sensor is in an appropriately sized housing in the correct location, ie too close to the turbo and they can pick up swirl as airflow, particularly just after lifting off the throttle.
Blow through maf works nice on 500+

Hi Andy,

Yes, sure is in correct location as Bob advised me of MAF tube size and location distance etc etc...

I'm just going to do a MAF clean now...wont replace it unless Bob spots something on next visit when Bosch pump fitted.
