Smile Top speed wrx 1994 import

Hya,

I asked a question about top speed not long ago and I was told 140mph, how can i improve this? is it just more power, or do I need a different gearbox?

I had a 2.0l turbo corsa and that would hit over 150mph no problem.

I have a 1994 wrx import any help would be great.

Thank mark

Your just gonna get yourself imprinted onto a wall somewhere!!

The need for speed is agreat buzz and whats the point in buying a car like this to drive like a pensioner!

A 140mph or more is perfectly safe in the right hands on the right roads i.e on a nice smooth long road and with the right car.

Thanks mark

the impreza is not really a great top end car, its a brilliant accelerator but the AWD lets it down at top end

Its 140ish, I think its mainly due to the gearing, ie 7k redline in fifth is 140 odd. Not that I'm advocating speed but I have taken mine to 120 on a deserted stretch before and its been pulling so I'm pretty sure theres enough power to get there. Not sure how much more you'd get with better gearing on a standard engine though as these impreza's have a lot of drag at high speed.

Hya,

Thanks for replying its a shame because I was hoping for a little more then 140mph but it does accelerate really well. I have read magazines and some impreza are 170+mph. some evo's are 155mph as standard.

thanks mark

If you want to drive at speeds of over 140mph then thats up to you but i really do not condone driving at these sorts of speeds

Surely the acceleration factor of a scooby is enough to give most people a 'buzz'??

And its because of people like you I have to pay twice as much for my car insurance!!

I got a car like this becasue I like it! Not becasue i want to drive at thses speeds.....And before you call me a pensioner im 27 and have already lost 1 friend because he thought like you...

You might be the best driver on earth but who`s to know if the old lady that pulls out on you when your doing 140mph has the ability to get out of your way before your both killed...

Thanks Mate!

Im all up for having fun but everyone needs to know where to draw the line..

They also need to be aware where eveyone else`s line is as well and drive accordingly....

If you want to drive like that then buy a race track!

1994 wrx top speed 112mph,
limiter removed 145mph at a push maybe,
if your doing track days etc all is well,
if on any public road no traffic, deserted road,3am in the morning or whatever its a big
personally i find the thrill of getting 0-60mph much more fun than going flat out.

You didnt really ask about the gearboxes limits you asked about all out top speed and how to improve it, by saying more power your not actually asking about limits of the gearbox imho.

don't forget your corsa is a lightweight hatchback with front wheel drive,so you can get more speed out of it whith the same sized engine)whereas the impreza is a 4 door family saloon with a heavyish 4wd system so uit's like comparing a pear with an apple 2 fruits, but different flavours.

The comment about how fast you want to go on the public roads is stupid imo no matter what time.

Magazines test cars without any care or responsibility so can push the cars to their limits hence why they can achieve the figures they quote. If you run an early impreza for some time at high speeds then it may go pop (inefficent tmic/scoop)

The gearbox in the early cars i think are good for 320bhp maybe more (but depends on the condition of the gearbox itself), so you would be better off increasing the power of the car then messing weith gearbox/diffs.
If you like speed so much i would get the brakes on your car changed (if they already haven't) as the 2 pots will not slow you down effectively from those sort of speeds (i know because i've done the speeds and found out that the brakes weren't up to it).

The impreza is not a top speed car without lots of work to keep it safe. but with a bit of work there isnt much that could see it off in the acceleration stakes. If you want top speed you would be better off with a Supra etc but if you want corner to corner speed then you have a good base car.

answer to your question, more power, higher rev limit, different gear ratios or final drive etc.

without supporting mods though as mentioned the tmic is not effective at high speeds so the car probably wouldnt last v long

Here's hoping your engine goes bang (which they are prone to) if you plan on regularly exceeding 140 mph on public roads

As everyone says, about a genuine 140 with 150-155 indicated at the red line in top gear.

Be careful

That 150mph in your Corsa was probably 130-135mph really.

To give you some idea when the speedo in my Corsa is at 40mph the GPS says it is only 36mph.

FWIW you'll get more fun from handling mods than flat-out speed mods (if that makes sense).

Thankyou all for the latests posts very helpfull.

As for the lad who lost his friend, Iam very sorry for your loss and understand why you are touchy about high speed, and Iam sorry to affend you.

As for its people like me put insurance up is a joke I have no points, or crashed or ever been in trouble with the police, if I do want to go fast I make sure the environment is safe to do so, so if anything went wrong it would be just me that gets hurt know one else, Iam not stupid or a boy racer and if I was to do these speeds regulary it would be on a track day I was just curious and like the thought of my car been able to do high top speeds.

I dont want to make any enemys so sorry if I affended anybody else.

As for the other people who just jumped on the band wagon to stir things there was no need, I joined this forum to gain more info on the impreza as its my first and also would of been nice to make acouple more friends.

Thanks again. Mark

A classic wrx with a UK DRIVETRAIN is capable of 170 (at least that is what the speedo says when doing it) but I am not saying coming on here saying that 'I want to go as fast as possible' is clever.

As previously stated, the classic WRX isn't really about top speed.... They aren't the most aerodynamic and suffer all sorts of problems at high speeds/ high rpms. Like Moley says, get suspension and brakes done first
