Default Waste gate solenoid

Hi chaps. I need a bit of help.

Have a 2000 impreza which has been remaped. Under hard acceleration in high gears it over boosts and losses power briefly.

Brought it to garage (subaru specialist) who said it was waste gate solenoid.
They offered to fit an uprated one (greddy) for £550. £285 for part and rest for fitting.

Said they would have to put it on rolling road etc.

How much is an oem part?

Is it a simple job. Does it need rolling road?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks
Brendan

The waste-gate duty solenoid is commonly called the boost solenoid and is a two port version on your car costing around £140 from Subaru. Unless you are after 350BHP+ there is absolutely no reason to change to a different type, and even then it's not absolutely necessary. Sounds to me like your car under load is boosting too close to the fuel cut setting and occasionally triggering the fuel cut. You should take it back to the mapper for a tweak and save yourself £550.

Cheers mate.

The car normally boosts to 15 psi but now hits 18psi at times.

Car was remapped before I bought it.

Is it a simple job to change the solenoid?

Thanks for your help..

What subaru specialist ?

Unless its broken its the map that needs adjusting and has probably been doing it since it was remapped. The mappper may not have fully tested it prior to giving it back.

I ask what specialist because if they think you know nothing you might get fleeced.

Remap was done by ecutek in Swindon. Car is now in Belfast though. Brought it to East Coast Customs (Belfast)..

The car has been fine for 6 months. No problems.

Sounds expensive TBH when Powerstation can run offers like this

Depends how flush you are for specialists I guess.

15psi is relatively low for a mapped car so I guess it's set for regular unleaded as the Prodrive map is fairly conservative and runs 16psi. The fuel cut is probably therefore unchanged at 1.2bar (around 17.5psi) so it looks like you are getting there. So maybe your specialist is right and the boost solenoid is sticking and failing to control the boost level properly. You could try cleaning it (do a search on here for instructions, it's a common topic) or just buy a new one, it is 7 years old. You can replace it yourself in less than 30 mins.
