Default slow 01 wrx uk

Hi guys im new to this forum so hello everyone, i am new to these cars and have had a 97 geen wrx wagon for around a month which is a flying machine (standard) bags of pull as the turbo starts to boost and just keeps on going right through the revs and gears, liked it so much i bought a new one!!! well new to me a 2001 x reg bug eye shape, wagon again, but its so dissapointingly slow, at first i thought it was just coz its maybe more refined, it just doesnt feel as fast, but it just doesnt boost and pull like the old one, feels like its gonna but then doesnt, so was told to get new maf sensor so did and seemed slightly better but not much, i put a boost guage on and its a bit jumpy but went t0 18 but then flicked violently between 12 and 18?, just dead dissapointed, could it be a boost leak? how do i best check? is anyone local with one willing to drive mine to see if its just me?? help!!
