Default eratic idle and missfire

hi im new to these subaru imprezas, ive got a 94 import wrx,
since ive had it its had a bailey dump valve on it but i wanted to put the standard one back on ,the car seemed to go better but as i came to a junction the revs stuck at 2000 rpm, then after about 5 seconds they started to surge ,they surge for about 30 seconds then it puts the engine check light on and starts to missfire, i thought it must be the dumpvalve sticking so i put the bailey one back on, but its still the same, ive checked for air leaks but cant find anything wrong

please can any one help im getting
worried it might be somthing
serious

Check JollyGreenMonster.co.uk for how to check for error codes ,Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia has a picture of the connectors that you need to use.

Possibly MAF issues

for missfirig, id say m.a.f. - recently changed mine, but on my99 cars theyre made of thin chocolate - try unplugging the m.a.f. sensor while the car is running. if it cuts out thats a good sign. if it dont, thats not soo good.

idle problems, have you try un screwing your idle control valve and cleaning it out recently? some brake/clutch cleaner works a treat. on my car takes a few mins to get going again, but idles fine afterwards..
