Loud Ticking between 2-3k
I have a standard MY05 STi Type UK with 15000 miles on the clock.
I have noticed in the last few days (after a drive to london) that their appears to now be a fairly loud ticking type noise (most notable when accelerating softly) through 2000RPM and 3000RPM (pretty much as it comes on boost).
I have done some reading here, and most people with noisy engines seem to diagnose the injectors.
Is this likely to be my problem also? or is it some sort of boost bleed valve rattling (if such thing exists)? Is it normal for the newage STi? Should i take it to Subaru to look at? (still got 2yrs warraty left)
I havent heard it this loud until recently.. always put similar softer, quieter sounds of this type down to injectors... but now having 15k on the clock is it likely they have worn in or something and this is how it should be?
Thanks in advance,

Not sure if it is the same thing, but when I accelerate on part throttle and lift off slightly I get a ticking noise (or chatter) from the turbo wastegate which is quite normal. Is there any reason you can think of why this would have become louder (e.g. changing your panel air filter to a higher flow unit?)

Does sound like an injector, do you know how to listen using a long screwdriver/metal bar to your ear..?
If so the noisy one will be very obvious compared to the others..!
The other, quite common thing is a rattly (sp?) heat shield..!

Thanks for the replies guys.
I havent heard of the screwdriver check (is it dangerous?)...
Also, i noticed that it doesnt do it when its cold if that helps... but its pretty much all the time when the engine is upto temp.
Should i get it to the dealer ASAP? Could it be serious?
I havent changed anything... it was literally a trip to London, and as i was getting close to home (like 200miles round trip) i noticed that this rattly ticking kinda noise had started between 2-3k revs... its like when the turbo starts to boost (and its even worse when im driving reletively softly)

Possibly your boost solinoid?
try searching the forums relating to the boost solonoid and have a read through, having read through my self sounds like its possible.
im no expert but i belive its NOT dangerous and is common , i get a ticking at around 3000rpm some times if ive boosted the car around a bit.....
front right side.
i had a mate listen with the hood open then reved the car to about 3000rpm and he pointed to the boost solonoid also..
worth doing the same.
all the best

Thanks, i will do... i thought it was that to start with, but their are soo many things on the engine that sound like they make the same sound.. its crazy.
It happens just as the Turbo is coming on boost, and its loudest when you dont have ur foot down (ie: not fully boosting), so it makes sense... its hard to get it to do it when the engine isnt under any load though.

IMHO, it sounds like a heat shield that's expanded through heat build up, although you should be able to replicate/hear it by revving the engine with bonnet up provided the engine is hot enough..!
Go for a run and pull up (at a safe spot..) whilst it's doing it (ie hot), leave engine running and either rev engine via throttle body or get someone else to do it and listen. Pay particular attention to the area around turbo/down pipe, where the heat shields are..
With regards to the screw driver trick, if done with common sense, then it is safe, just stay away from pulleys/moving parts etc..
Keep updating the thread when you get to the bottom of it..
