Default Check Engine Light Problem?

Recently checked my engine and topped up here and there, but then noticed that my coolant was empty, oops.
Filled it up and then started to notice my check engine light starting to come on and go off. 2 days later, checked the coolant again and it was empty, so filled it up again.
Since then, about 4 days ago, the coolant has been okay, but the engine light seems to come on and go off when it feels like.
Can air in the system cause this?

I'm totally useless with this sort of thing, so need some help please.

Scotty.

Cheers for that.

Have found that its error code 21, which is engine coolant temperature sensor.

How do i sort this problem out?

Also, is it anything to worry about, can i still drive the car?

Oh yeh, and where did the water go. Its not leaking now?

Scotty.

Have you notice if you fuel consumption has increased? if so its possible your temp sensor is faulty ... what would worry me more is where the water went first time around as its not normal that water just evaporates for no reason unless you have not checked the water for a long period of time ...

And yes if your water runs out its best to fill it then leave the rad cap off whilst your engine warms up on tick over ... it wont take too long... as the thermostat opens the water will start to flow and result in any air bubbles dispersing ... you can then top any loss up again

When i was last at work, one had been going and the other hadn't.
Got in my car today to leave my mates and the car had trouble starting, when it did start, it was burbling, but rev'd okay, but there was no chance of driving it.
Checked my coolant and there was white stuff on top of the water, but there wasn't anything on the oil filler cap.
The fan and engine light were on constant when i got to my mates and it came on straight away when i went to leave for home.
Is the head gasket knackered?
I hope its not, but need some advice a.s.a.p. My kind neighbour has lent me his car.

Scotty.

I don't know much about this sort of thing. Do i need to buy another head gasket? If so, how much to buy and fit?

Scotty.
