Default Possible boost problems, help needed please

Hi folks,

I have recently run into some problems with my scoob (MY99 Classic).

I dont have a boost guage fitted but I think my turbo has gone.

The symptoms are:-

1. Oil burning very quickly, full tank of oil gone in 20 minutes most of it going out through the back of the exhaust.

2. Car struggles to start.

3. BOV doesnt activate i.e there is no PSSSSST sound between gear changes.

I havent driven it in about 8 days now as I wanted to see what was going wrong.
So last weekend, I bought a 2nd hand td04 front entry turbo incase it was that and I removed the TMIC and there was some oil residue inside............

There is no play in the shaft that connects to the actuator, you have to be gentle with me as this is my first scoob and not quite up to speed with the setup etc.

Does anyone know what this might be?

Cheers in advance.

Steve

You will have oil residue in the intercooler and pipe work its normal, the point its only residue “may” mean the turbo is not at fault as generally you inlet side will leak once the seals go.

The car probably won’t start well due to the plugs been fowled with oil or possible down on a cylinder. I would remove the plugs and see if any one is more oiled this will give some indication if the oil is coming up past the rings or going through the inlet or the exhaust side of the turbo etc.

The turbo actuator arm play is not relevant here it’s the play in the shaft it’s self will determine the condition of the turbo.

Either way burning that amount you should find the cause with out to much trouble
