Flashing red light when connecting to ECU

Just bought a 'mobydic' to connect to my ecu and try and find out why myengine warning light is on but I seem to get a flashing red light where it plugs in, anyone else experienced this? Also can anyone recommend software?

might help if you say what year and model impreza you have?
