Default Airbag light on stock Steering Wheel?

Hi guys,

I have just bought an 03 WRX which has been fine for the best part of a week.

Suddenly however the airbag light is staying on... The steering wheel is the massive standard momo job, I've not done anything dodgy or touched anything I shouldnt have that I know off.

Any ideas where to look/start? Could this be a child safety thing I have somehow turned off?

Cheers
Matt

I'd check that the big yellow airbag connector under the dash is done up securely. Then move onto the yellow spinner part of the airbag loom attached to the steering column hasn't been turned too many times to rip the wiring. This will need the steering wheel off.
Better still, get the seller to look at this (unless it was a private deal).
Any record that it may have had a prang to set the airbag off?

Before looking at taking the steering wheel to bits I would check the connectors underneath you front seats as there are curtain airbags in the sides of the seats.
I had the airbag light come on a few months back and couldn't figure out why, checked under the passenger seat and the connector had come slightly loose due to a bottle of coke or something rolling under the seat during some "spirited" driving!!

The ones i have seen with this problem have all had a fault with the airbag connector that spins when the wheels turns.I think its yellow in colour when the wheel is off.

Its a steering wheel off job to take a look and you can usually hear it clicking which is a sign that its been incorrectly fitted after somebody has removed it for one reason or another.

It does have instructions printed on it on where it should be prior to the wheel being replaced but people tend to ignore instructions as they know best.

They can be sourced as a stand alone item usually from rally specialists who bin them anyway but new from Subaru you have to buy the complete airbag unit and the price isnt good.

Thanks guys, lots to try tomorrow!

I think if its not something obvious I will go to the Stealer, but I do have a mate who frequents here and has a very well sorted Scooby he has done a lot of work on himself, who I am sure might be able to help with the steering wheel if he has chance.

Regards
Matt
