Never had any problems with Tesco 99 but always felt more positive running V-Power.

i used to use tescos 99ron but strangely enough i get more miles out of Total regular unleaded by quite alot .
but if im going by shell because its a 15 mile drive ill fill it up with v power because it transforms my car anyway feels so much smoother and get miles more mpg than tesco 99ron

thats strange you get more mpg with shell but you got less chance of engine probs using the higher octane based fuel ie 99 ron

UK cars are not mapped for 95 ron, they are tolerant of it, in bog standard form. Many people have modded cars, decats and the like, in which case there is no guarantee that the OE map will be okay, I know of many situations where it most certainly is not.

Optimax was 98RON but V-Power is 99RON. I use both V-Power and Tesco99 in both the Sti Wagon and Type R with similar performance (seat of pants) between the 2. Certainly I dont see any more knock with 1 type of fuel, but I do add a bottle of Millers Octane Plus to every tank full. In theory this takes the RON over 100 which the engines are mapped to (JDM mapping)

There was a time when "5 star" was available at the pumps, 105RON if memory serves.

You guys are lucky, on the isle of wight the only super we have is texaco ****. its only 97ron.

from the factory my car has a sticker saying 98ron only

to make it worse when the previous owner had a re-map he was running optimax and an octane booster, so really it wants 99/100 lol

goes ok on 97, i put in a booster when i can be bothered(afford lol)

when ever im in southampton im straight for the vpower though, it loves it <3

Recent testing of mine:

Same map on the ECU.
Same Wideband O2 sensor

Tesco 99 shows 11.16 AFR
Vpower shows 10.8:1 AFR

Tesco is blended with 5% bioethanol to raise the octane along with other benefits but from what I read it is blended on a lower quality base fuel to Shell VPower.

I think the short answer about which is best depends on what your car is mapped for but I would never put even normal super in mine let alone 95 ron unless it was running on fumes and only then enough to get me to the next proper petrol station.

If you have ever monitored your ecu when you have put this lower quality stuff in, you would make the same decision.
