Default Broken rear diff ( Big time)

Well after needlessly panicking that my six speed gearbox had gone again (not long after a £1200 rebuild) I got to the root cause of my tranmission seizure today.

I thought it was the gear box as when the problem first occured the noise was coming from the passenger footwell area. This was noise being transfered down the probshaft to the gearbox. I was on my way to having it diagnosed when it let go completely.

On may way home (being towed) there was a repeated loud clunking from the rear of the car. So my problem turned out to be my rear diff.

The pictures will show the severity of the problem.

After a quick trip to a local scrapper I picked up a replacement diff for £150.

So swapped it in a day once again on my own, on my driveway with axle stands.

Job's a good'un

Although its been sorted out cheaply, to need a 6 spd requiring a rebuild and then the rear diff going sounds a little odd. Are the ratios definately matched?

Yeah Mate, They are fine.

The problem with the six speed was 12,000 miles ago and it was a 4th gear syncro issue.
I had the lot rebuilt as I sourced it second hand and i wanted to know it was ok for sure, its been fine since.
The diff issue was a combination of almost 500bhp and poor maintenance.

That's what mine looked like when I smashed it, quite a satisfying job to do yourself though.

I presume you still have an R160 rear if you got a replacement that quick, maybe time for an R180 upgrade?

Then I have to **** about with driveshafts and hubs and a different final drive on my six speed. No thanks!

I now have a spare case though and might consider a nice little Quaiffe ATB diff at around £550

But thats only if the R160 lets go again.

I have to say the one i got from the scrappy is in mint condition I changed the oil as a precaution and it was as clear as can be. Not even the slightest bit of debris on the magnetic diff drain plug either.

We'll see how it goes.
