Most likely NOT to be the 'stat'...
However, go to the loud end of your car.(best when its cold)
Open bonnet and follow the bottom hose from the rad to the engine.
Where the hose fits is the 'stat housing. It is held on by 2 long 8mm A/F scres that are hard to locate iirc when I did mine (only to find the head gaskets had gone).
The 'stat fits one way up, so note carefully which way round the one is in the block. There is a considerable ammount of coolant in the engine so be ready for a flood when the housing comes off.
Good luck!

Thermostat
Greaham, how the hell do you get the thermostat out once you have taken the cover off? Now the winter is here, the temperature never gets above the cold mark on my car, unless stood in traffic. When I tried to remove the thermostat from my old RA block I just couldn't get it out! This was with it on an engine stand as well, so it should have been easy! I would have thought they just push in and pull out???

They do, or at least mine did with a 'tug'.
There is a small bleed valve which iirc goes to the top side (BUT CHECK).
Easy when out to pop it into a saucepan of boiling water to see it move @ 100Deg. Mine did beutifully, but I installed the new one anyway.
Your engine should reach normal temp no matter what, so your stat must be knackered? A lot of crud builds up behind the stat in the housing, but as it's brass it should come free easy!
