Default wr1 salvage engine

can anyone see anything wrong from these pics? eg. any cracks.. it is a wr1 engine. i know that it has a damage on the sump. where the manifold hit, but someone said the engine is broken and the crank shaft is damaged. i can not see anything wrong though do the pics tell anything? it is going for 400 pounds.
thanx in advance

Crankshaft pulley is missing. Either snapped off or taken off to hide bent crankshaft. Blow to pulley may well have damaged internals.
£400 is cheap but then that's the going price for STi heads - and they may be damaged as well.
Inlet manifold and TGV valve motors are missing as well.
I'd pass on it.

you could always put the crank pulley, check the oil and turn the key! if it sounds fine then you laughing if not don't buy, but looking at it again theres a chance that the oil pick up could have been damaged not sure exactly where it sits in the sump?

i have the inlet manifold. aswell as the injectors on thir fuel rails and the fuel pump. payed 200 pounds for the lot. when i got home i realized the fuel pump is a walboro255 and the injectors are sard 800cc. violet ones. so i went back and bought the ecu wiring loom and the forge dump valve aswell. hopefully it is remapped. 150 quidd. the turbo was sold and the bent fmic is in the boot. any comment is appreciated guys. i dont want to miss this chace if i am on to a winner here

what is a tgv valve motor?how many are they and where on the engine are they located please

Underneath the red part of the inlet, there should be two silver TGV bodies into which the injectors fit. On one end is the TGV motor, the other end has a throttle position sensor.
The picture of the engine shows one TGV body left in place on the engine.
However, if the car was modified, the TGV bodies may have been swapped with JDM ones which don't have the TGV system. The JDM ones are less restrictive.
This would explain the missing motor - looks like the engine has had more than just simple modifications.
The ECU WOULD have to be remapped to take aco**** of the missing TGV system.

Buying the engine is a big gamble but it may pay off. If you do buy it then I'd strip it to check the crank.

Nope - the red inlet bolts onto the TGV bodies.
Here's a side view of a newage inlet maniold with injectors.

The injectors fit into the TGV valve bodies. The fuel rail then bolts onto the bodies and connects onto the injectors.
This picture shows the black TGV motor on the right and throttle pick up on left - but I think you have a JDM verison which won't have these.

only the WRX cars have the motors you mention Butty..............Sti simply has un-machined blanks..........
you still need them either way for the manifold to bolt to

UK and US STis also have full TGV assemblies.
Its only the JDM cars that had variations of the TGV assemblies.

If you come across a UK car without TGV set-ups then its been swapped for JDM items.

Basically, as said, there are two possible problems. Firstly, the crank may have sustained some damage from an impact to pulley (as said refit pulley and turn engine over if possible, look for pulley wobble). The other is whether oil starvation has occurred. Looking at the pics the sump doesn't appear holed, have you checked the oil level..? IMO the pick up shouldn't have been affected.

So, it's cheap if it's not sustained any of the above, otherwise it's a potential paperweight. As butty said (and provided they're ok) the heads are worth ~£400.

Who told you it's a none runner BTW..?

Sorry mate but you have been mislead, I had a STI8 type uk straight out of the factory and they do not come with TGV valves.

cheers

Sorry guys - I goofed up about the STi 8 - I was going by the TGVs on my 06 STi.
I must really take more pictures of the cars that I help with rather than rely on my ageing memory.

right, just bought the engine today.(sorry finnigan) this is going to be a very long project. the guy at the scrapyard said no one has taken anything of the car since i removed the inlet manifold and the injectors. so i sholdn't have any probs in that departmant. this engine will eventually go in my 2001 1.6.

i eventually want to get a md321t or h, don't know which is best for me yet. as i am in greece, i still have to wait untill the begining of february for the engine to arrive, asess, strip and then decide what to do. when you guys say "to build an engine" what do you actually mean? new pistons and remachined cylinders? because, i heard someone saying, the md321t works like witch craft on built ej20 engines, i am wondering what built actually means. i will carry on this thread on projects section, under the thread 'project 400'.
thanx for all the help guys.
